This is a page of admirers of one of the greatest men of 20th century Aleksandr Isayevich Solzhenitsyn (December 11, 1918 - August 3, 2008)
This site is dedicated to the last monumental work of Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn 200 Years Together. The book was published in Russian in 2002 and since then it was translated and published in French, but today, eight years later, Anglo-phone readers still wait for the book to be translated into English. Thus it happened that several truly selfless readers, impatient to share this immortal work with their compatriots, undertook the work which was abandoned by professionals. Below you will find the list of Chapters with information on their status and links to the translated material. Please note that not all the work is done by professional translators so please forgive the imperfect condition of the texts. It is our hope that as time passes, the translated material will be improved by dedicated editors. 06-22-2010 Important update! Now we have a professional native English translator who is willing to undertake the translation of Volume 1 for a fraction of market price. The usual tariff the publishing houses pay to their translators is 15-20 cents per word. Volume 1 contains 140,000 words. Multiplying 140,000 per 15 cents yields $21,000. Our translator is willing to work for less than a half of this sum - for only $10,000 - i.e. for 7.5 cents per word. Please understand that this is not much - if a translator translates and edits 2,000 words a day then it is a good and a well-spent day. It is particularly true when the work is so difficult as translating texts of Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn. Please note that our contributors will see the results of their generosity very quickly - we will post translated chapters as soon as they are ready. We will not wait until the entire sum is collected, we will rather proceed on chapter by chapter basis Please donate - any contribution is very welcome!
07-01-2010 update! Thanks to all our donors - the beginning is great! Our translator will start working on Ch. 5 after the holiday. The chapter is 7000 word long and will cost $500.00.
07-10-2010 update! Now we have another good translator who has already translated Chapter 22. I decided to divert some money from the fund dedicated to the translation of the Volume 1 to pay for the professional work of our second translator. The Ch. 22 costs $300.00. I have several reasons to believe that it is a necessary move: 1. We all know that volunteer efforts can go only so far - and having several professionals who are ready to work for the very low tariff can dramatically accelerate the pace of the work. 2. The response from our patrons was very good - we have collected $1600.00 so far and I expect even more generous funding as the project goes full-steam (when a substantial portion of the text is translated). Because I understand that at this point, at the beginning of the work, people are not yet entirely confident in the success of the enterprise. 3. I prefer to proceed as fast as possible and I strongly believe that our expanding expenses will be covered by generous public donations. Please donate!
07-27-2010 Update! Translated chapters are being constantly edited by our volunteer editors. The text files for download contain the latest edition while html pages may not be up to date. Our funds run thin. Next $400.00 will be paid in advance for translation of a massive Ch. 4 (14,500 words, $1000.00) Please donate! 07-31-2010 Update! JG gave 1,422.00 euros specifically to finish the block of chapters from 13 to 17! This is second contribution of this truly amazing man! Lets balance our sheets: Ch. 13 will cost $240 (4800 words x 5 cents per word) Ch. 14. Its status is not entirely clear, but anyway it won't cost more than $440 (8800 words x 5 cents per word) Ch. 15. Its status is not entirely clear either but I have already paid $250 from my personal funds toward it and total cost will be at most $480. Ch. 16 is nearly finished at no cost. Ch. 17 will cost $650 (9360 words x 7 cents per word) Total: $1810. It is very good fit - JG' donation after subtracting PayPal commission was $1736. Great. I will not use these money toward any other purpose, which means that we need a lot of money to pay for:
To pay for the Chapter 23 we need to raise additional $420! It is already translated and I ask our readers to donate so that the work of the translator is remunerated. Chapter 4 is almost translated as well and additional $600 are needed ($400 was paid in advance). Please donate!
